DJ A-TRAK & THE RUB "SUNGLASSES IS A MUST" LIVE 2XCD

"France's Disque Primeur label has issued this super official 2CD live set, recorded in (where else?) Indianapolis, IN. Now, I was never a skratcchh nerd, never listened to bootleg ISP tapes or nothing, but I can definitely respect the seamless way that A-Trak fuses his scratchy roots with his newfound inner party rocker. Ayres, Cosmo & A-Trak's tag team set is predictably great and features loads of blends and routines they built especially for the tour -- so even if you've been to every Rub ever, you'll still find something new here. Tucked away at the bottom of CD2 are some unmixed, digital-quality gems from the tour: A-Trak's awesome Lil Wayne / Richie Spice blend from the last Hollertronix volume, Cosmo's dope Temptations / Applause riddim blend and Ayres' Ying Yang / Yaz track." - Chris Lemon Red

COSMO BAKER "LOVE BREAK"

"The best mixtape of 2005." - Chris Lemon Red of Turntable Lab

"Essential classic soul" - Spine Magazine

"Cosmo Baker is identified on the Caps & Jones press release as "legendary Philadelphia DJ" and this is what that well-deserved title sounds like in June 2005. This is thunderstorm music, some heat-release, humidity spillover type of beautiful screen-window shit. When Cosmo put this up online first, he crashed the Rub's site in like two hours. FIND OUT WHY. - The Stencil.com

"This time around, The Rub enlisted the help of recent Rub party guest DJs A-Trak (ITF + DMC World Champion/Kanye West's DJ), DJ Platurn (2004 Scion Free Up Your Mix Champion), Paul Nice (Poughkeepsie's Finest) and Max Glazer (Federation Sound) in addition to the usual suspects (DJ Crooked, Catchdubs, Diplo, Low Budget, Omega One, Brendan Bring'Em and Mark Ronson) and residents DJ Ayres, DJ Eleven & Cosmo Baker for this second volume of remixes. It's the Motherfucking Remix Vol 2 sees the crew step their production game up heavily, running the gamut from simple
two turntable blends to intricately multitracked and arranged original remixes. In keeping with the arc of The Rub party in Brooklyn, the boys genre-hop across a vast spectrum of music: disco, old school rap, dancehall, 80s pop, indie rock, soul, southern hip-hop, classic break beats, intimate crunk and booty bass." - Turntable Lab

COSMO BAKER ".45 CALIBER FUNK VOLUME 2 - MARTIAL LAW"

"Unlike the lion’s share of funk compilations and mixtapes which select songs based on their rarity, Baker finds the fine line between scarcity and sonics and here chooses mostly elusive 45s, the musical content of which are as weighty as their price tag. Song selection is flawless... a CD like this which compiles 33 such gems is an economic Godsend and an invaluable educational tool." - Spine Magazine

DJ ELEVEN & COSMO BAKER PRESENT "I'M RICK JAMES, BITCH"

"Cocaine is a powerful drug." No shit, Rick! For a while, it seemed as if the sublime musical legacy of the Superfreak would forever be eclipsed by the 12 hours he spent skied out of his brain sodomizing a groupie with a crack pipe ("it's a celebration, bitches"). Fortunately, the now-legendary Chapelle Show sketch brought James back into the pop-culture spotlight, and has inspired Cosmo Baker and Eleven to tear through the entire back catalog of James' hits, obscurities, collabos and production work on this new mix CD. Punctuated by tight scratches and doubling, not to mention soundbites from Chapelle and Charlie Murphy ("DARKNESS!") themselves, the highlights include the Mary Jane Girls' party classic "All Night Long," Rick's "Give It To Me Baby" and my personal favorite Teena Marie's "I'm A Sucker For Your Love." Cosmo and Eleven also connect James' classics to more recent jams with "Mary Jane" (aka Redman's "Smoke Buddah") and a great megamix of "Cold Blooded" that blends the original with the cover version by ODB -- no stranger to the pipe himself. All obvious comedy value aside, this disc is a very solid listen, and a great reminder of just how good a funk and R&B songwriter Rick actually was. "Now come and smoke with your boy Rick James - the stickiest of the icky." - Catchdubs

DJ AYRES & COSMO BAKER PRESENT "HIP-HOUSE 2: DUDES GONE WILD"

"Hip-House 2 finds the BK/Philly duo laying down another party-starting mix of hip-house staples and uptempo hip-hop jams. A large part of the success of the first one was this carefree disregard for the musical Berlin Wall that supposedly divides house music from hip-hop. Ayres and Cosmo do a great job of operating from a middle ground between the two genres, equally appeasing house-heads and hip-hoppers alike by casting a wide net in their choice of track selections, ranging from rare Stetsasonic to the Jungle Brothers, a requisite remix of Missy’s “Lick Shots,” and loads more. Extra props to the boys for keeping things fresh with leftfield/ broken beat joints.” Everything’s mixed in a proficient and smooth style that keeps things moving." - DJ Language

DJ AYRES & COSMO BAKER PRESENT "HIP-HOUSE

"It's the perfect soundtrack to get you pumped up for a night out, I felt like I was back listening to Merlin Bobb's Saturday Night Dance Party on WBLS. This mix is yummy as a slushy, and just as sticky sweet. The fellas have spiked the already potent brew with liberal amounts of current acapellas and re-edits (Ghostface, Joe Buddens, Missy, Kelis and Outkast all make cameos), a logical update of the original idea that shakes any cobwebs off the concept. Kicking off with the ultimate hip house cut, Twin Hype's "Do It To The Crowd," a quick run through of some of the genre classics from well-known rappers follows. Latifah's "Come Into My House" has been a big gun in my house sets for a while, licking shots here alongside nuggets from fast rap masters Craig G, YZ, Special Ed and Rob Base. A short segment that immaculately links megablasts from Aly Us, Mr. Fingers and Marshall Jefferson with the Jungle Brothers' "I'll House You" acapella is nothing short of levitational... By the time Frank Ski starts calling out the "whores in this house" you know it's cuz they're all up on the dancefloor." - DJ Monk One
